Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is a surgery to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients who don’t respond completely to medications or can’t take medications for another reason. During the procedure, a surgeon creates a sphincter (tightening muscle) at the bottom of the esophagus to prevent acid reflux. The esophagus is the tube between your mouth and stomach. It is part of your gastrointestinal system. Laparoscopic procedures are performed through very small incisions while the surgeon watches on a video monitor.

Nissen fundoplication will treat esophagitis and prevent it from converting to Barrets Esophagitis. In those who have already Barrets Esophagitis, in mild form of barrets esophagitis surgery has a potential to reverse it, but moderate and severe types of barrets esophagitis are not reported as reversible diseases.
